Blog 6 video Analysis

In this blog I will analyse two music videos from Lady Gaga commenting on genre, representation, target audience and video meaning.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bESGLojNYSo&ob=av2e "Poker Face"-Lady Gaga Genre: The genre of this video is Pop. Representation: This video represents it's genre by having a regular dance routine during the chorus like most Pop video and included the artist wearing a variety of outfits. Target Audience:This videos main target audience are Lady Gaga fans who are mainly teenage girls aged 13-17. I think this because of the previous blog magazine readerships and YouTube views are mainly this age group are A, B and C1 audience however due to the news articles in the previous blog prove that her audience is a much wider base then what the NRS website. Meaning and Narrative: The video aim and meaning is slightly fun and relaxed I think the video sticks to the themes of the song by having a poker game occurring in the video and using props you would find in a game of poker. This makes the video easy to follow and similar to the wording of the song.

"Just Dance"-Lady Gaga

Genre:

Again like the video above the genre is Pop; this is the main style of Lady Gaga

Representation:

This video represents the genre Pop as its a dance video which shows a giant party with lots of crazy outfits, it also represents the target audience as young people like to party and these are the majority of her fans

Target Audience:

The main target audience for this video are Lady Gaga fans who are usually females aged 13-17 I think this because of the previous blog magazine readerships and YouTube views are mainly this age group, I also found from the magazine readerships the majority of her fans are from social economic groups A,B and C1 this is also part of her target audience, however I feel people also from groups C2, D and E could also be fans but just might not read them magazines that she has featured in.

Meaning and Narrative:

The meaning of the video is about a party and everyone dancing around and having a good time, it also relates to the lyrical content of the song as the lyrics say "Just Dance" and that's when shots are of people dancing.

It is evident from "Just Dance" to "Poker Face" how her budget has changed; in "Just Dance" she had a small budget and the video was relatively simple however by "Poker Face" her video looks more budgeted and looks more professional as there are a variety of locations used unlike In "Just Dance" where a few locations are used.

Blog 5 Target Audience Of Artist

This blog will be about the research conducted to establish the main target audience for the artist lady Gaga. Magazines: To start with i decided to find a magazine she had recently been in one of which was "vanity fair" I then used http://www.blogger.com/www.nrs.co.uk to find out the readership total and the socio economic groups which read this. The results were that in total 293,000 people read this magazine and that 217,000 of this total are from groups A,B and C1 only 75,000 of readers are from groups C2,D and E. When looking at the age group 212,000 readers are aged 15-44 and that 236,000 of readers are female.

So from these statistics I have a rough idea on a target audience for her which is mainly females aged 15-44 in socio economic groups A,B and C1. However I can;t make a solid judgement just on this magazine as not all these readers may be Lady Gaga fans.

YouTube:

The next place I chose to research was http://www.youtube.com/ to fins out the number of views her videos received and also to check out where the majority of viewers were from, age and gender.

This is for her video "bad romance" this map shows which countries have most watched this video the areas shaded in dark green are where the majority of people that watched this video are from. The map shows that the entire of America and Canada is in dark green and so is the majority of Europe; this information helps me understand that the majority of her fans are in these areas. The main gender that watch this video are females aged 13-17 followed by males aged 35-44. I find these statistics more reliable then the magazine ones because this is based on Lady gaga alone whilst the magazine was not.

FaceBook and News reports:

The next resource I used was FaceBook, I located her fan page and went to check how many fans she has, it showed 18,000,000, this gave me a rough estimation on how popular she actually is. A recent news report shows that lady Gaga is more popular then Obama on social networking sites, evidence like this proves that her fan base can't be limited to just one group; she is so popular that a large amount of the world are part of her fan base.

When researching more about this artists I discovered she has so far sold 15 million albums and 55 million singles worldwide. In the majority of Europe and America her singles have all charted highly which gives an indication that she has a large fan base in these countries.

Below is the link to the news report about her fan base.

Blog 4-Permission

We sent an letter to Lady GaGa's record company Interscope to ask for copyright permission below is our letter we sent; Copyright is important in the music industry as it stops other people taking credit of artists works and stops people stealing songs from each other. Without it many artists songs would be claimed by others and the industry would be unfair.

Blog 3 Song Choice

When choosing what song our group was going to choose we all agreed that we wanted the song to have emotion in it that we could portray through the video we also wanted to use an artist who used abstract ideas as it would allow us to make the video more creative and not cheesy. In the end the final song we decided on is "Brown Eyes" by Lady Gaga; we chose this because Lady Gaga is an artist who's music is fun but also holds strong emotion and creative ideas we also all really liked this song and had strong ideas on how to create a video for it. Below is the link to the lyrics of the song: http://www.lyricsreg.com/lyrics/lady+gaga/Brown+Eyes/ We were going to chose a song by Taylor Swift "Fifteen" by it was to sweet and was not abstract enough; we felt our video would end up predictable which was not the approach we were going for.
